Pluto and the new dwarf planet are not completely identical, however. While Pluto's surface is moderately red, the new dwarf planet appears almost white, and while Pluto has a mottled-looking surface which reflects on average 60% of the sunlight which hits it, the new planet appears essentially uniform and reflects 86% (+/- 7%) of the light that hits it.

New Research from UCF Suggests Yes. (Photo courtesy of NASA) The reason Pluto lost its planet status is not valid, according to new research from the University of Central Florida. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union, a global group of astronomy experts, established a definition of a planet that required it to “clear” its orbit, or in other words, be the largest gravitational force in its orbit.
Now why does a planet orbit the Sun and not the Sun orbit the planet? The lighter object orbits the heavier one, and the Sun is, by far, the heaviest object in the solar system. Pluto is not a planet because the International Astronomical Union has chosen a definition of the word “planet” which excludes Pluto. They did this very knowingly, because they felt that any definition which included Pluto would be either arbitrary (Pluto is a planet because my fourth grade teacher said it was) or open ended (the list of planets would add a member every two or three years).

Why are Venus and Mercury planets (according to current classifications) but not Pluto? As it turns out, the reasons are pretty straight forward. Back in 2006, The International Astronomical Union (IAU) decided to define what makes a planet. The IAU is a worldwide organization of astronomers.Because of its peculiarities, many have suggested that Pluto should not really be considered a planet--that it had a different origin and is more closely related to a comet or asteroid. Answered by: Paul Walorski, B.A., Part-time Physics/Astronomy Instructor Jan 10, 2020 · That was true until 2015 when the New Horizons spacecraft flew by and gave gorgeous close-up images of it. However, the biggest reason Pluto is on people's minds is for a much simpler reason: in 2006, a small group of astronomers (most of them not planetary scientists), decided to "demote" Pluto from being a planet.
